  14. Although Bill Gates has apparently firmed up prices for Microsoft Corp's
  15. Windows NT operating system, they still aren't finalised, according to the
  16. company. The first ship date has moved off into the future again, and "no
  17. later than" August 1 is the new target. Ac- cording to Gates, in comments
  18. reported in PC Week, large corporate customers looking to upgrade from Windows
  19. 3 to NT will be able to do so for less than $100 per desktop - the upgrade
  20. price for Win- dows users will be $300, which translates to $180 "on the
  21. street" and less than "$lOO per system" after deep volume discounts, Gates
  22. told a meeting of the Corporate Association of Microcomputer Pro- fessionals
  23. in Chicago. OS/2 users will be offered "extremely low prices." NT's suggested
  24. retail price for new - desktop - users will be $500. More bad news is that
  25. memory requiremeats are continuing to soar - Gates last week recommended that
  26. NT users install l6MB on their desktop machines, even though the documentation
  27. may specify 12Mb - and no more than about 10% of 80486 machines have 16Mb.
  28. Servers could require more than 16Mb, he added. Initial NT buyers will need to
  29. have specific applications in mind for it - "If you don't know why you want
  30. NT, you probably don't want NT," he said.
